In order to raise awareness for rare diseases in general, the NCL-Foundation is partnering with schools for the project “Learning Partnerships for A-level Specialization.”
Using a rare genetic disease, genetics and genetic testing are explained and illustrated through a concrete example. This project also includes practical experiences, such as preparing a (fictitious) prediagnostic counseling session or a 'PCR.' Furthermore, the Foundation has provided orientation and training for teachers to be able to replicate the project directly.
Meanwhile, high school students around Hamburg are helping the NCL-Foundation themselves. Students at Gymnasiums Marienstatt during the 2010/2011 school year collected donations for the NCL-Foundation through various campaigns. At the graduation ceremony, students presented Dr. Frank Stehr, Head of Research, a check for €11,611. As a thank-you, they also had a surprise: a video message from German music group “Wise Guys,” who began in the 1990s as a school band in Cologne and sang a capella.
