The investigation of NCL is addressed to the clarification of the mechanisms of disease on the one hand, to "comprehend" the disease. On the other hand it aims at the targeted application of medicaments (also protein substitutes) to palliate the syndromes.

The major intention is the application of gene therapy to finally cure NCL. In the field of this research the NCL-foundation is focused on the development and expansion of a network, composed of scientists of different disciplines. These scientists commit honorary, for example in the Scientific Advisory Board.

Furthermore, the foundation assumes the advice of scientists interested in NCL and the procurement of third-party-funds, which are issued by companies and other foundations. A start-up financing can only be made by the NCL-foundation in very exceptional cases.
